How to add a WhatsApp enquiry button to your website
For many businesses, WhatsApp is where enquiries actually turn into sales. A well-made WhatsApp button needs no plugin, no widget and no extra code slowing the page. It's just a link, and a little thought about what it says.
The link
WhatsApp's click-to-chat link has this form:
https://wa.me/919596320118
Replace the number with yours in full international format: country code first, then the number, with no plus sign, spaces, dashes or leading zero. On a phone, tapping it opens a chat with you. On a computer, it opens WhatsApp Web or the desktop app.
Add a first message
You can pre-fill the first message so the customer only has to press send:
https://wa.me/919596320118?text=Hello%2C%20I%27d%20like%20to%20ask%20about%20the%20family%20room
The text after ?text= must be URL-encoded, so spaces become %20 and so on. The trick that makes the biggest difference is to name what the visitor was looking at: the room, the package, the course or the product. You know what they want before you reply, and they don't have to work out what to type.
Where to put it
- Next to every price, package, room or product, with a message naming that item
- In the header or as a small floating button on phones, so it's always reachable
- On the contact page, alongside phone and email
Avoid chat widgets that load large scripts on every page; a plain link does the same job without slowing the site.
Use WhatsApp Business
The free WhatsApp Business app adds a business profile, an away message for when you're busy or closed, quick replies for common questions and labels to track enquiries. Set the away message to say when you'll reply, so nobody feels ignored.
Measure it
A WhatsApp tap doesn't show up in your analytics unless you track it. Set up an event in GA4 for clicks on wa.me links, so you can see how many enquiries the website sends and from which pages. My analytics setup includes this.
Don't make it the only way
Some customers prefer email or a form, and some business buyers can't use WhatsApp at work. Keep a phone number and an email address or form alongside it. My guide to what gets a travel website enquiries shows how this fits with the rest of the site.
